Highgate lies to the North of the City of London and was once part of the Great Forest of Middlesex. Holly Lodge estate was originally the home of the great philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts, who took a great interest in the problems of respectable working class and lower middle class people. The land on which the whole estate sits is administered by the Holly Lodge Estate Committee, made up of residents from both the private houses and the Council blocks.

These blocks, which now form the council estate, originally housed young ladies who worked in business and needed a safe environment to live in. Several bedsits on each landing shared a bathroom and all recreational functions took place on the site of the existing community centre.

There was an elaborate restaurant, a theatre, a library - and a thriving women's community. This has made Holly Lodge a popular point of interest on historical walks. What is possibly not so popular is the one-in-six hill (although the views are breathtaking).
